Julia Lindemalm

Julia Lindemalm began visiting animal parks in 2011 and the result of these visits is a photographic reflection which is both personal and documentary. Zoo World comprises photographs taken at 10 animal parks in Europe, from Berlin to Borås. Included in the exhibition are photographs from the crisis-hit Sea World in USA. But the geographical location is unimportant. The exhibition portrays our relationship with animals in captivity on an e xistential level. By arranging nature according to our own desires we push further away that which we yearn for – the wild. Zoo World highlights our unrequited love for animals and questions our self-appointed role as rulers. As the years have passed, this work has become a dokumentation. Cages are being rebuilt and more and more critical voices are being heard. Perhaps these photographs might soon be a record of a bygone era. Julia Lindemalm (born 1984) lives in Malmö and works as a photojournalist. In her art she explores humans relationships to animals. She is educated at Mid Sweden University and the Danish School of Media and Journalism and have, in addition to photography, studied Critical Animal Studies at Lund University. Her first book Katt People, on people and cats, was released in December 2016. The same year she received the first Lars Tunbjörk Award. Zoo World is released as a book in connection with the exhibition at the Cultural Center in Ronneby
