Feasting and globalization

The forces of globalization in the late 15th century ushered in the end of the European Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern period, overturning social and political hierarchies. Notably, the primary impetus for European voyages of exploration across the world's oceans was procurement of globally-sourced spices. In late medieval Scandinavian societies, consumption of these exotic goods at feasts was an unmistakable indicator of elite social status. Feasts, particularly those involving spices imported from Asia, were a method of maintaining the social distinctions essential to hierarchical feudalism. Gribshunden is an extraordinary archaeological site that provides direct evidence of the imported Asian luxuries available in the Nordic region, even before direct connections to India and beyond. I present the food and food-related artifacts from the wreck of this royal ship, which sank in Blekinge in 1495.
